Senator McConnell,
Your time in Senate almost parallels the time I have been alive. This is an issue itself, but that must be addressed another day. Today the matter at hand is that you choose a path forward to lead the Republican Party to do the right thing in voting for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
I was born in Northern Kentucky and have lived here my entire life. Because of this, I was a registered Republican until 2016 when I could no longer identify with my party and the candidate they elected to lead our great nation. A nation that he made far less great and far more dishonorable. For the last 4+ years, you stood behind a man that was nothing but a disgrace and threat for our country. And while your loyalty is credible, your actions are reprehensible.
We are at point in our nation’s history when you have the opportunity to be known as doing what is right. Republicans look to you for leadership. Will you not teach them that doing what right is more important than a party line? The political gains and games must take a moment to cease while we heal our nation. The images from our Capitol on January 6 are some of the most disturbing of my time. They were with no doubt, incited by former President Trump. Now is the time to send a message to him and his frightening supporters that jeopardize the very foundation our county was built upon, that this behavior is not welcome anymore.
I believe you to be a good man somewhere under all of those layers of politics. And in that belief, you must know former President Trump is responsible for inciting the events of January 6th and so much more that you find unsettling. I beg of you sir, vote to impeach former President Trump for the ground it will gain us and in hopes that such type of a person never holds the highest office in this great nation again.
Respectfully,
Dawn Denham
